Brittany Unruh | Director of Partnerships & Navigation
Shawn became the CEO of the Puyallup Food Bank in 2021. He is primarily responsible for fundraising, planning, budgeting, and ensuring that our organization reflects the values and purpose we have demonstrated over the past five decades. Shawn has an eclectic vocational background, beginning his career in transportation with his father and brothers nearly forty years ago. With experience at Costco and a degree in nonprofit administration, Shawn is dedicated to helping our team successfully manage millions of pounds of freight each year while supporting our staff and volunteers in addressing the resource and relational needs of our clients and nonprofit partners. Our tagline, "Food is the First Step," encapsulates Shawn's belief in the board's vision for creating a more hopeful future, which he sees as the best way to serve our community. In addition to his work at the Puyallup Food Bank, Shawn is passionate about incubating food-based businesses, assisting his children and grandchildren in farming, and serving people in crisis as a FEMA-certified disaster response chaplain. Shawn and his wife, Cheryl—who is his favorite food bank volunteer—have been married since 1995. When he is not engaged in his professional or volunteer activities, they enjoy hosting friends and family at their favorite place, Alder Lake.
David Coe has been serving as the Chief Operating Officer at the Puyallup Food Bank for the past three years. With a degree in Electronics, he has accumulated 31 years of experience in food banking, primarily at Northwest Harvest, where he held various roles across IT, Transportation, Operations, and Finance. At the Puyallup Food Bank, David oversees the safe operation of our fleet, equipment, warehouse, food bank, and volunteers, along with anything else that may arise. He is dedicated to realizing our board's vision of helping people beyond just providing food. “Having observed numerous hunger response organizations concentrate solely on distributing pounds of food, the board's vision of offering individuals space and support through one-on-one engagements is what attracted me to the Puyallup Food Bank. The chance to create that space within our operations and witness the positive outcomes of those interventions is truly a blessing.” In addition to his role at the food bank, David is a member of the Pierce County 4X4 Search and Rescue team and the Puyallup CERT team. In his leisure time, David enjoys working on vehicles and equipment, exploring nature, bird hunting, fishing, and spending quality time with his wife of 32 years, Amy, who also volunteers at the food bank. Alongside his responsibilities at the Puyallup Food Bank, David offers consulting services in the IT field for various businesses and organizations.
Brittany serves as the Director of Partnerships and Navigation at the Puyallup Food Bank, where she is instrumental in offering personalized case management and crisis intervention. With nine years of experience as a dental assistant, she transitioned to the non-profit sector and is currently working towards her bachelor’s degree in social services, with a minor in family science. Brittany’s commitment to helping others is deeply rooted in her personal journey of overcoming alcoholism and drug addiction. Recently married to Kyle Unruh, they live in Sumner, WA, where she actively contributes to her community. Brittany excels at building connections and ensuring that others feel seen and valued. She takes joy in watching her son play high school football and supporting her nieces and nephews in their athletic endeavors. In her spare time, she loves to laugh, enjoy game nights, paddleboard, hike in the mountains, and camp with friends and family. Brittany and her husband share a passion for adventure and travel, and they look forward to exploring more in the future.
North Cady | Director of Programs & Grants
North is the Director of Programs and Grants at the Puyallup Food Bank. His two main responsibilities include applying for grants to fund our operations and special programs, and also evaluating our programs to ensure we are having the best possible impact on our community. He started at the food bank as a “programs floater,” helping out in the warehouse, in 2021. As a trained facilitator, with a background in community development, North helps out with our annual partnership summit, where he guides non-profit leaders in discussion about our community and how to collaborate for the holistic well-being of cities across Pierce County. Before coming to the food bank, North was a sociolinguistic field researcher in Papua New Guinea for 3 years, advocating for the needs of minority language communities and advising decision makers on how to best serve them. North’s background in research makes him a great fit for helping the food bank define what success looks like, going way beyond what other food banks even attempt, to tackle the broken relationships underlying poverty. North owns his own business, selling his large acrylic paintings. He is a published author of short fiction, a singer/songwriter, a former youth pastor, childcare provider, and a lifelong learner. On the weekends, you can find him hiking, surfing or playing nerdy board games with friends.
